I am not a big fan of reality TV. In fact, other than the local news I wouldn't know network TV was missing if they all shut down tomorrow. I get my world news on cable and on line. But tonight I stopped mid channel surf to get my clothes out of the dryer and it landed on Fox's Moment of Truth. I'm going to record it on the DVR from now on. This show is a train wreck. here's the premise.
On THE MOMENT OF TRUTH, the challenge is simple -- answer 21 increasingly personal questions honestly, as determined by a polygraph, and win up to $500,000. This is the only game show where participants know both the questions and the answers before they begin to play. Prior to playing, participants are strapped to a lie detector and asked a series of questions by a polygraph expert, who records their answers. At any time, between the polygraph and the televised game, participants can change their answers or walk away from the competition. You have 4 or 5 family members, spouse, etc, sitting across from you, while you sit in a chair, and Mark Wahlburg the Antiques Road show guy throws the questions out at you.
Last night the woman contestant was a real piece of work, a whiskey tango princess. Sitting across from her was her cop husband, parents, a sister and some ghey friend. It was brutal. At one point her ex boyfriend came on and asked her two questions, her sister saved her by ringing this buzzer on the first question, but you can only be saved once. The second and third questions were related to if she still loved him and if she thought she should have married him rather than officer McCrushed, she answered yes to both. She also answered truthfully that she had sex with someone other than her husband during the marriage. The camera keeps panning to the husband who is clearly pissed and devastated. And before we start feeling sorry for any of the participants , lets keep in mind that 500 grand is the payoff if you answer truthfully. So greed is the motivator here, and the family members are hoping for a slice of the pie.

Then comes an easy question. Do you think you are a good person. Mind you she has just destroyed her husband on national TV and in front of an audience who cheered like Romans at the colosseum with every question. She had admitted to stealing from her job, boning some other guy, not loving her husband, so the "Are you a good person" question should have been a no brainer. Anyone who had just admitted to all of this dirt isnt going to think they are a good person. Our saving grace as humans is knowing when we have done some wrong , and feeling guilt or at least remorse. So admitting that we aren't always good people is what separates us from the really bad people.....make sense? She answered yes, Im a good person, and it was false. She lost.
I figure it is only a matter of time before someone gets killed, beaten or set on fire as a result of this show. In the meantime its worth watching if you like train wrecks. It is also a pretty good study of the human condition. I'm guessing lil Miss Whiskey Tango has some splainin to do.
Sounds like a sophisticated version of Jerry Springer.
ReplyDeleteNo thanks.
Better than Springer.
ReplyDeleteI'll start taping.
Way better than and not at all like springer. Not to over hype it, but it really is a glimpse at peoples darker side, we all have one, we just dont all admit it. You will like it RDM, its good stuff.
ReplyDeleteI started watching this after I heard about the first episode. This is the only show on TV I feel the need to watch. Damn you for posting this before me.
ReplyDeleteTrain wrecks of that sort make me very uncomfortable for some reason. Can't stand to watch them. I'll stick to my CSI's.
ReplyDeleteMakes me wonder what I'd be asked that I'd be inclined to lie about... can't imagine.
ReplyDeleteDid you see the one where they asked the former Marine/now waiter if 1) He did something as a Marine he was ashamed of? Yes... Truth... 2) if as a waiter he cheated on tips ... yes... Truth... 3) If he told ethnic jokes about his Asian girlfriend? Yes... Truth 4) If he thought his girlfriend was boring. Yes... truth... 5) If he flirted with girls other than his g/f? Yes... Truth... 6) If, in his days as a model, he stuffed his BVD's to make himself look more stacked in the crotch (my wording, not theirs) No... Lie... So the idiot tells the truth on everything except a question that asks whether or not he has a small package.
Men.
I saw the advertisements for the show and was really excited about watching the premiere. I got through about 5 minutes of the show and couldn't bare anymore. I don't know, it seemed forced.
ReplyDeleteI've been watching the show since its premier. All in all, its a lot of hype with little substance.
ReplyDeleteThe contestants all know the questions they will be asked, and obviously they know if they told the truth or lied.
None, barring last night's fiasco, have even tried to go past $100k. Only 2 have lost and they have both been on subjective questions that could go either way.
But the potential for drama is huge, as we saw last night.
You ought to check out Amnesia. Its NBC's answer to the show and features Dennis Miller hosting and it is pretty funny to watch the contestants squirm about stuff they should know about themselves. Dennis Miller was born to host a show like this.
I bet there will be a murder after one of these shows, like the whole Jenny Jones fiasco in the 90's.
ReplyDeleteHell, lets make it really interesting and give them all loaded guns to hold.
ReplyDeleteKeep me updated! I never can seem to get to watch this show! It sounds good though!
