A few weeks back Well Hell Michelle put up a short post about submitting her blog to the review site Ask and ye shall receive. So I clicked over the link and read the review of WHM's blog. Michelle got a good review and deservedly so. After reading her review I wandered around the site, coming across some of the most scathing, sarcastic, belittling reviews imaginable. That's not to say that the reviewer wasn't dead on the money, they were. And I liked that. I also told myself there was no way I would put my stuff out there to be dissected by some anonymous douche nozzle. And then I submitted my blog for review. Here it is if you are interested.
If you have thick skin, and want a no holds barred perspective about your blog, then this is the place to go. I wont go so far as to say these people are the final word on what constitutes a good blog, but most of the reviewers seem to have a solid grasp of writing and what makes it worth reading. Be forewarned, they tend to focus a fair amount of attention on the aesthetics of the blog page. The reviewer and a couple of commenter's claimed to have retinal damage from my white text on black background theme. I also think that the reviewers feel obligated to take a few swipes at you just for grins. Another reoccurring point of contention in the reviews I read, Michelle's and my own included, was Feelings. Holding out and not giving enough of yourself in your writing. With that in mind I will be emoting on my tragic childhood and my closet metro-sexuality. Not likely and as if.
All in all I think the review was fair and spot on for the most part. Ask and ye shall receive is a useful tool if you want some unbiased insight in to your writing and your blog in general. Glad I did it and no regrets, even though I think I write circles around 2/3 of the blogs they gave higher ratings. Then again that could just be my lions roar ego overloading my hummingbird ass writing skills. I had been contemplating making some aesthetic changes to my blog, prior to the review, so an outside opinion is helpful. I'd also like any input, suggestions or smart mouthed comments from you, the readers of this blog. So feel free to add your 2 cents. I've already muted the black and white colors of my page, so hopefully you can all remove your welders goggles while reading . Hope everyone has a good un this weekend. See ya Monday.
I submitted my blog to them as well. You can read my review here: http://tinyurl.com/6h4278
ReplyDeleteFor the record, the review was before I changed to my current template and before I started using drop down blogrolls and archives.
But, more to the point, I think they done ya good. They are mostly fair, but I'd give you more than a couple of stars.
You're an excellent writer. I've never read a bad post here. Never.
I think content trumps everything else.
thanks my fellow chrome dome, and back atcha. I actually read your review when WHM linked it. I agree on the content over asthetics thing as well. I do need to change up the look of my page though. Just havent figured out how to do it, outside of the limited Blogger offerings.
ReplyDeleteI posted a shout-out to my readers for assistance with my template and was rewarded with some very, very generous assistance by some talented, web savvy technologists.
ReplyDeleteI could probably scare up a link to the site where I got the html code for my drop down menus, if you are interested.
I'm on my way over to read the review now. But before I do, I would say "nuts" to that retinal burn crap.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I find the white text on black background the easiest to read. The AAYSR use a retinal-burning RED background, which is an order of magnitude more eye-straining than your template.
In fact, I'm a huge fan of the simplicity of your template. So as far as that goes, the reviewers can just go eat a turd.
Now, I'm off to read the review.
I think the review was pretty good. Ignore the stuff about the template and the white text on black. If it works for you, that's all that matters.
ReplyDeleteAnd the crap about writing only what you want people to read? Isn't that the point of a blog? Write whatever you want... I'll be here reading every last word.
I see they ragged on a bit about your prison posts, but hey, you can probably tell from your comments that your readers loved them. I look for something unique in a blog and you deliver...
ReplyDeleteHey Mr MM,
ReplyDeleteI think you've given a good take on the review itself.
The slight muting of your black is already an improvement.
Bear in mind I had to read as much of the blog as possible in a relatively short period of time, therefore the visual was rather hard.
I did say that the content was the important stuff, that will always be my priority.
Also, the previous comment about 'ragging on about the prison stuff', I said the prison stuff was interesting, and highlighted a few particular posts.
The problem with a voluntary review such as this, it is always subjective, one person's opinion who tries to be fair.
Well done sir, have a good weekend.
I have to agree with the white text on black background being tough to read. (Not to mention making it completely obvious that I'm reading something on the net when I'm at work.) I generally copy and paste it into a Word doc so I can read the black on white instead.
ReplyDeleteBut the muting you did was immediately noticed and appreciated!
I don't know that I'd want my own blog reviewed. If the reviewer is anything like Brad, then probably not!
As a former "blogger" (1996-1998) I remembered from my psychology classes that yellow is easiest on the eyes from a physiological standpoint, so I combined that with a dark gray background, muted the yellow just a bit, and came up with a winner.
ReplyDeleteAny blog that uses a bright red and white background doesn't carry much credibility when critiquing others' styles. After visiting AAYSR, it felt like I was staring at a pile of Bud cans in an operating room.
Your writing style is fine. Who cares if it doesn't follow Stunk and White?
Enjoy your blog, and back to lurkville I'll go.
Yeah I'd have put you in the "I fuckin' love you" category as well.
ReplyDeleteHey MM, have you considered allowing the full post to appear in your site feed? The teaser that appears in the feed reader isn't enough.
ReplyDeleteDitto on full feed. Most of the time I read blogs in Google Reader and they all look the same to me, therefore, I care about content and yours is one of the top blogs on my list.
