Pretty in probation, or Ugly will get you 6 to 20.

So I stumbled upon this website, Bad Teacher, while checking up on some of the douche bags that comment on the KC Star. Basically the site lists teachers, bus drivers, janitors, anyone who happens to work in or for a school and has sex with a student. Missouri has 33 people listed, Kansas is lagging behind with only 22. The difference in sentences is striking, and as you might expect the length of sentence, if any, varies based on the sex of the teacher, and on the degree of attractiveness. In other words, the hot young female teachers usually get probation while the fugly females and most of the males get an entire collection of Encyclopedia Britannica thrown at em. Let's take a look.

Alison Peck, a 24 year old band teacher from the Springfield area, was blowing a 14 year old boys bugle, even had a motel rendezvous with the kid after she was charged. She got probation.

Teresa Engelbach, 22, of Pevely, Missouri and a former substitute teacher and volunteer track coach at Senn-Thomas Middle School. She also had a taste for 14 year old boys, and received probation.

Cathy Heminghaus, 47, of Ferguson, Missouri a former Special School District teacher at Ferguson Middle School, had sex with a boy between 14 and 16. She is doing a six year stretch. She also isn't much to look at.

Male teachers in general received harsher sentences regardless of how they looked. I didn't check up on Kansas teachers, but I've got feeling the results would be the same. I'm not breaking news here, we all know that pretty, young, white teachers, more often than not get off with probation, while homely female teachers and most male teachers get jail time for similar offenses. Using your classroom as your own personal meat locker is wrong. Your looks and sex shouldn't have any bearing on the case, yet time and again we see that it does. Here's the rub, even I find the act less abhorrent when its a younger, attractive female teacher, and a teenage student. My mind tells me it's just as wrong, should be punished just as harshly, but I don't find myself as outraged as if it were a middle aged male teacher. Now I'll be the first to admit, that is some fucked up thinking on my part. while many may not admit as much, I'm far from alone in this. So I'm interested to hear what you clowns think. Sound off, but be honest, I'm really curious as to why people view one case worse than another based on the appearance and sex of the teacher. I have a feeling female readers will have a different view than most male readers, if everyone is being honest.

  1. I think the younger pedophiles(yes, that's what they are) get a slacker sentence off the percieved notion that that "they are young and don't know any better". Sounds like BS to me.

When I was 24, I knew that trolling the mall looking for a teenage taste was wrong, and so did our villain de jour.

Let's face it: some 14 yr olds have bodies of adults, and yet have the brains of a 14 yr old. Any adult who takes advantage of that disparity deserves have a timeout from society of a few years.

They should all recieve the same punishment. Unequal application of punishment is not fair, obviously.

  3. Makes me shake my head in disgust at how messed up the justice system in this country is.

Not to mention idiots like Mike Huckabee going around granting clemency to any perp in prison who claims to be born again.

  4. Don't we always hear about young boys being taken to older prostitutes to get some experience? Remember the song Maggie May? I remember my college male friend thinking that was so cool. On the reverse side, older men/younger women just shows a dirty old man who can't make it with a woman his own age so goes after the adolescents. That and they turn him on more cuz they're ripe but untouched. Well, they used to be. As a female, I admit I get mad at older men going after the young girls but like MM, I am not as appalled or bothered by young boys and older women although I should be. Some of those slick pretty teachers are just feeding their egos just like the old men.

  5. First reaction: Why didn't I ever get the good teachers? I know I shouldn't joke, but Ms. Engelbach? Nice.

Secondly, I didn't research the case, but it does say that Ms. Heminghaus was working at a special needs school. If she took advantage of a special needs child, the court may have found that her crime was an order of magnitude worse than the others you've found. It's also possible they've somehow factored in the age differential between Heminghaus and her students - making the case that a greater age difference is somehow worse (note that this bias may well be inadvertent). Fun example: Applying the "half plus seven" rule to Engelbach, we see she *should* have dated someone no younger than 18, so she's seeing someone 4 years too young (by that calculus alone). Applying the same rule to Heminghaus, she shouldn't date anyone younger than 31, which is 17 years removed from the 14 year old student.

Third, the US Census Bureau's 2008 estimated population of Kansas is 2.8 million, while Missouri's estimated population is 5.9 million. This gives us one event per 127,273 kansas residents, and one event per 178,788 missouri residents -- which is far less often. Clearly, kansas is winning this game.

  6. Even if they are young and pretty now, in five or ten years when they do finally get a prison sentence, I'm sure they won't be so pretty then. With a long line of screwed up kids standing behind them. Budding serial child molesters, the lot of them.

  7. When I was 14 years old, I wish I would have recieved a hummer from a 24 year old hottie.

    Damn.

  8. This is all too perplexing for me- not that attractive folks get all the breaks, that's the way of the world- but the whole wanting to have sex with children. Uggh.

  9. I think it's the age that plays a factor not the "hotness" The first two teachers were only 7 or 10 years older then their victims. Middle aged men and women are some times decades older then their victims.

  10. That is an awesome post. Your candid thoughts make it even better. It is a world for the beautiful isn't it? Thanks for writing it.

  11. The bottom line is this: You can live in the 1820s if you want, but "kids" from 14-17 are NOT "children". They are teenagers, and they know so much more about sex than for some reason most adults want to admit.

Does anyone here REALLY think that some adult, (male or female), who had sex with any minor, (male or female) did so to a minor who had no clue what sex was, wasn't willing (Now I'm sure some weren't, and the ones who forced someone should be shot) and was horrified when it was over?

I don't want to hear about how a "minor" can't legally agree to sex because they aren't old enough to know what's going on. 12yo? Sure. 14 or 16? Give me a break. And why is it a 15yo girl who kills a 9yo girl can be tried as an adult (Rightfully so, I hope she gets the death penalty although that won't happen) because she was old enough to know better, but had a 40 yo slept with that same 15yo girl, she would be painted as a naive little victim who couldn't consent because she was a "child"?

I just shake my head when I read comments from people who think it's doomsday because some 30 yo had sex with a 16yo. If it wasn't forced in some way, it's not really that big a deal.

Instead of trying to put someone like that away for life, how about saving the cells for those POS who kidnap, rape, and kill the real victims? The 5yo children that most of these laws were enacted to protect, and not twist those laws to apply to friggin 15yo girls who share nude cell phone pics of themselves.

One last thing: If 16yo is too young for sex, why is it some states in the US allow 16yos to have sex legally? It's ridiculous some states have an age of consent at 16, some at 17, and others at 18. That makes no sense. Find one age and stick with it.

  12. comment: as a less-than-attractive female, i have ALWAYS known beauty makes everything in life better. (hell, i've been pulled over and given made-up tickets by cops, while my more attractive friends got out of it EVERY single time.) yes, virginia, the world is unfair, and if you didn't know it before, then your parents missed doing their job.

question: is there still a disparity between genders when it comes to the age of consent, or has that been changed?

  13. To the post: Yes, if you're pretty or handsome you get the better of things. If you're a little rough looking, you will have to work a little harder then the boo-ti-full.

To the comment about 14-17 y/o not being children: yes, they are not little kids anymore, but they are not fully cooked yet either. They deserve some protection from old folks who would take advantage. I think there is something wrong with a 30 year old who wants to have sex with a 14 year old. To me, that person is not strong and mature enough to take on a peer in a real back-and-forth adult relationship. Yuck!
