It was just another Sunday morning. There was nothing out of the ordinary. I took the dogs outside around 9:00 a.m. as I usually do. The air was crisp and cold, and the wind sent a chill down the the back of my neck as I stepped outside, but that chill was only a precursor to the spine chilling event that I would unwittingly walk right in the middle of only moments later. It would leave me shaken to the very core of my being. I want to warn readers that the following photo's are pretty graphic, and were taken at great risk by yours truly.
Turf wars are nothing new. The battle I witnessed took place over this unextraordinary piece of ground.

We had just cleared my driveway when a thug flashed a gang sign and threw down the gauntlet.

I fought back the urge to turn and run as he followed us up the driveway. It was all I could do to keep my camera steady.

After several minutes of serving up some verbal abuse in a language I couldn't comprehend, the battle began.
Max was fearless, like the true terrier he is. I couldn't understand what the furry tailed rat said, it was all clicks and whistles to me. But Max understood enough of it, and he liked it none too much.
So he rose up and up, and up. Nothing but air and hang time. Like Mike.
Just so you know, that wall in the picture is about 4 feet tall. Max is about 9 inches tall and tips the scales at about 3.5 pounds. The squirrel outweighed him and definitely had a height advantage. But he fled post haste. Max kept his turf. I know you were expecting some shocking photos of an actual gang war or rolling gun battle. If you people think I would stand out in the open , risking life and limb to take pictures of a gang war then you are crazier than that squirrel. Maybe next time.
Reading this made me laugh. Squirrels can be very territorial. When we moved into our new apartment my husband got video of two squirrels almost fighting over food.
ReplyDeleteHow funny. He may be small, but he is mighty!
ReplyDeleteYou sure Max isn't some kind of rabbit or kangaroo?
ReplyDeleteMM, I'm in tears in laughter. Only you. Only you could pull this off. Great story line and pics to boot!!
ReplyDeleteMy cocker spaniel, Sophie, hates those furry bastahhhhds too. They taunt her. They eat my birdseed. They must die.
ReplyDeleteGo Max!
Midtown, you are awesome. Thank you for risking your life in such a dangerous manner. Your action photography rocks!
