JoCo residents latest fashion accessory, the Machine Gun.

Kansans once again have aced Missouri residents when it comes to fashionable and rational trend setting. Governor Sebelius signed a law allowing Kansas residents to own Machine guns, sawed off shotguns and silencers!! That's right boys and girls, you can be the first kid on your block to barricade yourself inside your leawood home with a machine gun!! Stocks take a dive, and you want to go on a killing spree why go half assed, you can hold the police at bay a whole lot longer with a fully automatic weapon!! Looking for a new way to trick out that Hummer? How does a 50 caliber machine gun mounted on a tripod sound? And ladies, this isn't just for the guys, I hear Fendi and Gucci are both making stylish purses with special compartments to hold that mac 10 you've been eying. Kids, are your parents giving you a hard time about that new BMW you want for graduation? Well pop a cap in their ass with dads own silenced pistol, the neighbors wont hear a thing!!!

Seriously this has got to be the most bone headed law to come down the pike since some clown decided blow jobs should be illegal. Governor Sebelius has lost her rabbit ass mind. In 2006, she vetoed a bill allowing qualified Kansans to carry concealed handguns, only to see the Legislature override her, yet she put a stamp of approval on John Q's right to own a weapon that can spray hundreds of bullets in a matter of seconds. Way to fold Kate.

The reasoning behind this law being passed is that Gun dealers cant legally posses machine guns, silencers and sawed off shotguns, making it illegal for the dealer to deliver these types of weapons to the police. That reasoning seems pretty thin to me, couldn't the law have been written so dealers could posses and sell them to law enforcement, without letting any knucklehead who could pass a background check buy them as well?

And then there is this moron, Senator Phil Journey, a Haysville Republican who is a strong gun-rights advocate and championed the bill. Want to know his reasoning behind allowing regular folks to posses these weapons? Well it's a really sound and valid argument, if you are Corky who starred in Life Goes On, that is. "I can't even afford them," said Sen. Phil Journey. Whew, I can breathe a sigh of relief. According to the idiot in Senators clothing, Machine guns are really expensive, so you don't have to worry about a fully automatic weapon falling in to the hands of the poor cash strapped common criminal. Unless said criminal happens upon one while ransacking some Machine gun owners house during a burglary. When asked why someone would need a machine gun, silencer or sawed off shotgun, the senator wisely responded, "Why would you own a corvette?" Because classic cars are just like Machine Guns, except they don't spray a shitload of bullets.

I've got no beef with gun owners, if you want to have a small arsenal in your home, that's your right. But there is no rational argument for a private citizen owning a fully automatic weapon, a silencer or a sawed off shotgun. And one last thing Senator Journey, shotguns don't cost 20 grand, you can get a used one for about a hundred clams and hacksaw blades are dirt cheap. Now put your helmet on and go play with the rest of the idiots in the Kansas senate who passed this bill.

  1. I think it is a great law for honest law abiding gun collectors. You really need to do some research on this subject since it seems you are spouting out of emotion. To purchase a machinegun you have to pay a $200 tax stamp and have background checks done. Next, you cannot buy a machinegun made after 1986 or somewhere around that time. I know if they legalize suppressors in Missouri, I will be the first in line. You do not have to wear ear plugs while shooting with a suppressor and it makes target shooting a pleasant experience. Owning this kind of hardware is no more different than owning a 426 hemi. I think they should make Liberals illegal or have specialized licensing for having a liberal type attitude.

  2. Anony, if Liberals were illegal, this law might not have passed since Democrats in Kansas overwhelmingly supported it (only 9 people voted against it in the Senate and only 18 voted against it in the House of Reps). It was also signed by a Democratic governor.

What MM fails to realize is that what the law actually does is repeal most state requirements over what Federal law already regulates. Federal laws regarding the ownership of automatic weapons are still in place as they have been since the 1930s.

According to the Topeka Capital Journal, the law "brings Kansas in line with all but a handful of states.". Probably even Missouri.

  3. annon, I dont spout, I leave that to clowns that think paying a couple hundred bucks for a special stamp somehow proves they are competant to own that type of ordainance. I also clearly stated that I have no problems with the right to bear arms. And Emaw is correct that the reason the bill passed was due to liberal votes. As for law abiding folks owning that type of weapon, how does that prevent some non law abiding type from stealing it and it ending up on the street? Tell the cops, emt's and firefighters that got shot up and shot at by the legal gun owner off of bannister and grandview about 5 years ago , that all guns are okay. That guy had a 50 cal, armor piercing , legal gun. Doofus.

  4. I have to say with all the drugs coming across Kansas from Mexico and gangs establishing everywhere (including I think my small town), I'm not going to worry about a legally bought and registered gun falling into the the wrong hands.
The criminals already have plenty of them.

  5. I have to say 'well done' to the KS lawmakers on this one. Perhaps you don't realize that the registration process behind these guns and silencers is so extensive? You have to get photographed, fingerprinted, get a signature from your local chief law enfocement officer, then send the forms in duplicate with a $200 check, wait MONTHS, then, when the federal government gets around to sending the stamp back to you, you can go buy/build the gun. I know because I've done it. Believe me, no criminal is going through this for a short-barreled gun or an auto, when he can (as you so correctly put it) get a used shotgun for $100 and hacksaw it. Of course, it would be illegal, but then again criminals aren't great at following the law in the first place, now are they?

And your argument about criminals having easy access to full-auto guns is just baseless. Do you really think that someone is going to drop $20,000 on a transferrable (read: legal for civilians) MP5 and then leave it out for a thief? Not when you can buy a safe for $500 or less that would take dynamite to open.

I appreciate the fact that you're not anti-gun, but I guarantee you that this law will have literally ZERO effect on KS crime rates. The only people who go through the hassle to get a tax stamp are true collectors and aficionados who are going to use them responsibly and store them safely. Why? Because when you make a mistake with one of these guns, you go to FEDERAL PRISION. That's right - owning one of these guns mean you have to tell the feds where you live, inform them in writing every time you move, and you can't take the guns interstate without prior written permission. They keep close tabs on me - who's keeping close tabs on the thug on the streetcorner with the stolen gun in his waistband? Not his parents, not the local cops and definitely not the Feds.

  6. This guy has no idea how to research legislative proceedure or he is just a liar. I did not have the class 3 sections drafted. Rep. McKinney D-greensburg did. The bill I drafted increased the penalty for grinding the serial number off of a gun. After my bill was passed by the Senate the House committee amended the Democrats bill into it. Yes I voted for it as amended. But the Democratic Governor signed it. If you are going to offer your opinions to others at least try to be truthful. Know it all who wish to impose their ill-informed opinions are truly a danger to us all. Far more than someone who can pass 2 federal background checks

  7. Short barreled rifle/shotgun: If you are having to defend your home from a criminal who has broken in, it is best that the barrel not be 28" long, and thus easily grabbed and pointed away, or worse, allow the invader to yank it out of the defender's hands. So, rather short barrel increases the safety of someone attempting to defend their home, while not requiring them to compromise on effectiveness by going with a handgun.
Furthermore, there's no legitimate reason to heavily restrict them on the basis of their being easier to conceal. Handguns are far easier to conceal and they are not so heavily restricted as short barreled rifles and shotguns.

Fully-automatic firearm: Going beyond the obvious reason, which was the original intent of the 2nd Amendment, I.E. in case armed resistance to government oppression once again becomes necessary to restore liberty to the country... There is still the fact that, if you are having to defend yourself from someone who is too stoned/drunk/insane to really register pain, stopping them is a matter of doing enough damage that they are biologically incapable of continuing their attack.
Furthermore, in areas where Coyotes are a real problem for farmers and ranchers, it is often necessary to hunt them in situations where throwing as many rounds at them as can be accomplished is the best way to hunt them ethically, in other words, cull them without making them suffer unduly.

Silencers: I know a few people who have permanent damage to their hearing because of someone unexpectedly firing a gun near them when their hearing protection was off. The fact that a silencer can reduce the volume of a gunshot below the range where it is risking permanent damage or loss of hearing makes silencers *safety devices*. Would you ban seatbelts because they allow criminals to safetly drive a car through a store's front wall and then steal what they want?
Furthermore, there's the matter of being considerate to neighbors. They may have different sleeping hours, or a baby in the house, and having a loud boom every few seconds from the yard 200 yards away would be a real nuisance.

Rational reasons, every one of them.

  8. In about thirty minutes, any competent machinist can machine the lower receiver of an AR-15 so that it will accept an M-16 sear. The select fire bolt carrier, trigger, disconnecter, safety selector and the sear are all available by mail or at any large gun show. After the lower receiver is machined for the sear, you can reassemble your rifle with the select fire parts and you have an illegal but fully functional machine gun for $1500-2000. A smart criminal can make that happen, so why shouldn't a legitimate citizen be allowed to have the same fire power as a crook?
