You knew it had to be coming sooner or later. I've offered up my unsolicited opinion on a plethora of subjects, so this was only a matter of time. Gay Marriage. It's legal in California, at least for now. To say that a whole ass load of people are worked up over this issue is an understatement. People are down right pissed and offended by just the mere thought of Adam and Steve or Thelma and Louise saying their I do's and till death do us. I've got to be honest, I just don't get what the big deal is.
The basic argument against Gay marriage, as best I can decipher, goes something like this. Marriage is defined as a union between a he and a she. Other than that one line, over simplified definition, the rest of the argument is pretty much based on a spiritual / moral high ground. Let's face it, whenever you throw God in to the mix, there will be no shortage of righteously indignant folks weighing in, and the Gay marriage debate is no exception. And as soon as the God squad gets involved, the equally fervent Un-God crowd is sure to follow. I've got the solution to end all debate and put this thing to bed once and for all.
And now to the gay folks. Stop acting so pissed off all the time. Everybody gets a turn at being downtrodden and kicked around. Every race, creed, and color, under the rainbow has ended up with the shitty end of the stick, at one time or another. (Pun not intended, but still funny). It's just your turn. On the bright side , the ability to get married, even if in just one state, is a pretty big coup. Sure it's not what you want, but it's a start. This shit takes time , just ask anyone of color. There will never come a time , when everyone will accept your lifestyle. So stop demanding the impossible. You cant cram acceptance down someones throat. (Pun Two). Enjoy this small victory, and don't come crying to me when you figure out this marriage thing ain't all it's cracked up to be. Good luck and congrats.
Look, I'm not trying to be flippant or minimize the need for equal rights, for everyone, but the whole back and forth between the pros and cons, is getting a bit old. This thing is a push, nobody is going to cave in. At the end of the day the institution of marriage won't suffer any more than it already is.

To the folks who are worried that allowing Gays and Lesbians to marry will somehow damage the sanctity of holy matrimony, I say this. If you really believe that God only recognizes marriage between devout men and women, whats the problem? Just don't recognize it either. Tell yourselves that these people are only fooling themselves, and the marriage isn't valid in the eyes of God. Let them sort it out when they see him, unless you think Homosexuality is a mortal sin, in which case you get the added benefit of knowing they will burn in hell for all of eternity. Bonus, double jeopardy.
Last time I checked, traditional marriage wasn't exactly working out in accordance with the whole forever and ever theme. I also don't think there is much danger that same sex marriage will corrupt otherwise upright people. There wont be an outbreak of guys falling on random meat whistles, and I doubt we will see hordes of women morphing in to Rosie O'Donnell clones, thankfully. So everybody lighten up, it ain't the beginning of the moral bankruptcy of America, trust me we filed chapter 7 a long time ago.And now to the gay folks. Stop acting so pissed off all the time. ReplyDeleteI actually got into a "discussion" about this with my dad last night. I don't care. He thinks it's horribly wrong. It didn't end well.
