Letters from Dogpatch

Nothing beats a good reader response. It warms the heart when you hear from someone who was moved by something you wrote. I wanted to share a couple with you all. My post on Kansas City's Dogpatch is still getting responses. Two residents were kind enough to send along these kind words, and now I share them with you.

Chrissy writes " I have lived here in Dog Patch, all my life i love it here,An as for rolling the windows up, An locking the door's go. if that was the case. Do you really think that your suck up little rich boy ass would of made it through this bitch? FUCK NO!An by the way one of those picture's you took an put on here with out permission happend's to be my grandmother's!Who the fuck are you to down great, an critisize someone!!!FUCK YOU!!!!!! "

Nice. Kiss your brother with that mouth, Chrissy?

Will has this to say "WELL IF DOG PATCH IS SUCH A BAD PLACE HOW DID YOU MAKE IT THROUGH HERE TAKIN ALL OF THESE PICTURES IVE LIVED HERE ALL MY CHILDHOOD AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH ANYONE SO I THINK YOU REALLY NEED TO GET YOUR SHIT RIGHT AND LAST OF ALL YOU DONT NEED TO TALK SHIT ABOUT PEOPLE YOU DONT KNOW JUST TO MAKE YOUR LIFE LOOK BETTER P.S. GET A LIFE "

I'm feeling lots of love in the room.

  1. Well, I've changed my mind! With caring neighbors like these kind folks I think I might just go and purchase a home up in that bitch.

  2. Double-M, it sounds like the two of them are English majors, judging by their writings ...

  3. You need look no further than those posts to answer the age old question: How do people LIVE like that?
Some of those shacks are probably an upgrade to how your two fans live.

  8. Wow! I think I linked that post on my blog, it was an impressive a piece of local color that most of us never visit in our own cities.

I'm amazed at the ugly response. You treated the area with compassion and dignity. Your commentary was insightful, respectful and, I felt, sad at the state of the neighborhood. It was a good post.

Fuck 'em if they can't take a an honest look at their current state of affairs.

  11. I think they are just defending their home.

And they're defending it the best they can - and I would just suggest a little compassion.

    And understanding.

They don't have the benefit of being articulate. They are the object of what they perceive to be an unprovoked attack, someone criticizing them driving through their neighborhood at a distance.

You have the advantage, Midtown. On all fronts.

So having the advantage, what is the right thing to do?

I appreciate the ethics lecture, however I stand behind everything I wrote. I also clearly said that there were decent people living in that area. I was less than kind about every area I wrote about in my Urban Blight series. Strangely the only one anyone took me to task for was the dogpatch area. I wouldnt do or say anything different, if I had it to do again.

  13. Bullshit! You take your little WalMart camera and run around taking pictures so your usual readers can fire up (along with you) their masturbatory fantasies about why their part of town is better. Stick to the shithole part of town you are familiar with. For a man (?) that is proud he spent time dropping the soap in Club Fed, grow a pair and get out of your little man car and talk with the people. You will be surprised. Your "Urban Blight Series" is a one note joke. Just to keep the JOCO wingnuts feeling good about their gated, HOA controlled part of town. Nice job, asshat.

  14. I just wanted to take the time to say thanks to all of the residents of Dogpatch who took time out of their busy day to respond. I think you have proven my point. I said all along that there were a few decent folks there and a whole lot of not so decent types, I think the comments prove that.
