Racist or Jaded?

The murder of Keighley Alyea is getting a lot of press, and with that coverage there is more than a little criticism, and much speculation from local blogs. Tony's Kansas City compares Alyea's death and the subsequent coverage, to the black on black crime that has become so commonplace it doesn't draw the same type of coverage. While many may take exception to his wording, he makes a good point. The point being, we tend to kill our own more often than not, and the media also tends to fall all over itself when the victim is white, while many murders on the east side receive scant coverage in comparison. To be fair, we don't hear about young white people killing each other as often in this city, simply because it doesn't happen as often. In the two latest examples, the death of Keighley Alyea, and the young father beaten to death in Independence, there is a common thread that connects the killers, they were young white punks.

More than a few people will, or already have, called racism in the disparity and tone of reporting when it comes to the race of the victim. Frankly, that's not a fair assessment of the situation, it's more than a little short sighted, and kind of lazy. The media is always going to over hype certain stories, they are always going to go for the pitch that tugs at the viewers emotions. They really do report differently when the victim is a young white woman, as opposed to another killing in the inner city or the troubled east side. Maybe the white reporters and anchors get together at night and burn crosses while laughing at Amos and Andy LP's, but it's highly doubtful. More likely, they just go with the story that will put asses in seats. If a Unicorn got hit by a car on Main street, it would be big news, if it happened every other day, year after year, people would lose interest. While there is no comparison to human life and fictional animals, my point is, the disparity isn't so much racism as it is commonality. And that's the rub, the ongoing murder and brutality happens with such regularity in the black community it's become business as usual. I'm not saying that it's right, or that it's fair, it just is what it is. The media may be jaded, they may not hype stories of the latest death of a young black person, with the same intensity as a young white person, and that's because the audience has become jaded.

There is a disconnect, white people in the suburbs can't relate to drive bys and neighborhoods that are tantamount to war zones, because that's not where they live. It may not be fair, it may show a bias, and for that the media is to blame, but the hard and unpolitically correct truth is, the media, and the white viewers, aren't to blame for the ongoing black on black crime that occurs with such tragic frequency that it no longer shocks the senses. That's the real tragedy, and there is plenty of blame to go around. Maybe the question shouldn't be; Why the disparity? Maybe the real question is; Why so much killing that it's become commonplace, almost non newsworthy? Now there's a story, sadly nobody in the media has the balls to put it out there.

  3. Another sad reality is that sane commentary like yours, instead of being a non-story or par for the course, is considered controversial. It's too bad that one has to have "balls" to state what is obvious. We deserve what we get when it comes to our news and our politicians.

  4. Earlier this year a friend of mine was murdered in Colorado by her ex-boyfriend. I knew her because I worked with her in Johnson County. She was educated, had a great job and never in any trouble but none of us could ever figure out why she had dated this guy who was a real loser. Police caught up with the killer in Chicago and he killed himself before surrendering. Now, this. My daughter knows Keighley's aunt. If that isn't enough, the body of a woman who had been murdered and set on fire was found about a mile from my house this past winter.

This is pretty shocking for a white woman who lives in Johnson County. I've gone my whole life and never known anyone who was murdered until this year.

Our society is totally breaking down.

  5. Dear MM: Good posting!! No, the city's journalists don't go to KKK rallies and listen to racist TV shows. The coverage they provide is what the citizens are interested in receiving--as Pogo said: "We have met the enemy, and he is us." When the mass public demands as much coverage of East Side homicides and news from Afghanistan as they do of murders of young white women and news about celebrity scandals, then that is what the media will cover. Sincerely and Respectfully, Ernest Evans

  7. I was debating whether or not I should respond to Anon or just let it pass...

MM, you are right that most murder (and maybe most crime) is intraracial--the doer and the victim the same race. White folks killing, at least around these parts,is more news worthy due to the lower frequency. It's the man-bites-dog phenomenon. If a dog bites a man, is that news? No, but if a man bites a dog, now that's news. And we, the public, are part of it too, cause we watch the man bite the dog, but are a little bored by the dog biting the man.
The pity of it all is that all the murder victims are equally dead, whether they be White or Black. A lot of potential lost, families saddened, people hurting and angry either way. Maybe it is time to help individuals find other ways of resolving conflicts besides ending the life of another. Maybe it's time for us to look at ourselves a little closer.

Anon, we can agree on one thing: murder is wrong and needs to be stopped.

  8. Sorry, but just looking at those guys makes you want to put them behind bars.

Trash is trash, black or white.

Let's see what the evidence indicates. These guys need to be proven guilty then we can start talking about what to do with them, and who is to blame.

  9. I'll add a little more. Not just ANY white woman. but very attractive white women. You won't see 200 pounders on CNN. Just the cute ones. Like Elizabeth Smart. Poster girl for high ratings. CNN even had a leggy swim suit picture of her which they ran for the first couple days but somebody got that one off the air and it hasn't been on since. THE MWWS (Google that!) isn't all of it. It's somewhat racial maybe but I expect that a young, attractive black girl or hispanic girl would also get the same kind of press. But its mostly attractive victim... for the killing of an attractive girl seems much more of a crime. First, any girl should be a non combatant, where young males, well. UNless he was a clean cut kid on the student council caught in crossfire, he more likely was just a casualty of hanging around with the killing kind.

IMHO, your garden variety drug or gang killing? Well isn't that just ghetto justice? I don' think most people get too excited over that anymore than if a terrorist in Iraq gets killed. I know I know. Every dead boy is a mother's son. Well males aren't usually considered non-combatants and if their homies don't value their lives enough not to kill them, well, I don't think society will react differently. I'm sure ALonzo would write his usual undignified protest, but hey.

IMHO, your point is very right about how these crimes just don't happen so often in the suburbs and since news really is what's unusual, expect more coverage. For a producer though, an attractive law abiding victim makes it a no brainer.

Those three boys, one of whom looks to me like a kid in the wrong place at the wrong time, they'll be covered all the way to sentencing...day after day. EVEN KMBZ will send their street reporter to the JOCO courthouse. Yeah, its true, JOCO seems to be the only courthouse where local radio covers murder trials. So you're not wrong about the bias.

  10. MM: I would just caution you to put "alleged" before "killers" when referring to this trio, and the ones in the young-father case. They've only been charged, after all, and not yet convicted. That said, at least two of the three above give off creepy vibes.
