What gets lost in the Waldo Rapist coverage.......

I chimed in on the Waldo Rapes when the count was at 4. Now it stands at 5, and the story dominates the news, it has become fodder for blogs, advertisement for gun shops, a boon for the security and self defense industries, everyone has an opinion or a hand in it. Short of being killed, rape is the beast every woman fears more than any other. If you are old enough to remember the heightened sense of fear and barely controlled panic during any of the Westport rape sprees, then the cases coming out of Waldo give a sense of Deja Vu. We have been here before, and it's an ugly place to be. Cases like this drive the news, the tail wags the dog. As if the crime itself weren't bad enough, the waters have been thrown in to a muddy tumultuous frappe, because race has entered the equation. So let's talk about the 250 pound pock marked elephant standing in the room.

The rapist is black, the victims have been white, the race is on. Anyone who thinks that race isn't a part of the equation is naive at best. This is a city that is divided along racial lines, always has been, and it always will be. The way you view these crimes depends upon what side of the line you reside on. If you happen to be black and living in one of the city's war zones, you probably feel some resentment toward the media coverage and the police response to the waldo rapes. If you reside on the white middle class side of the line, you probably are of the school of thought that says, black on black crime is usually a case of one thug killing another, just another causality in an ongoing war that has nothing to do with you and yours. Both schools of thought have some validity, how much depends on which side of the line you are on.

The most important part of the equation in the Waldo rapes gets lost in the media hype and the racially charged squabbling.

The victims.

The 5 women who have had the safety of their homes forever compromised don't care about disparity in coverage. They aren't concerned with the perceived racial disparity. The fact that 5 rapes by the same perp makes the odds astronomical of ever even crossing paths with rapist, doesn't matter to the 5 women who have. They have crossed paths with him, and it will impact the rest of their lives. Anyone who believes otherwise needs to check their self. For the people decrying the disparity in coverage, comparing apples to oranges, just ask yourself one question. What if it happened to my wife, my mother, my sister, a friend? Would I be appalled over the media beating this dog to death?

Let me answer that for you. No. Of course you wouldn't. The odds of meeting up with the Waldo rapist are a moot point where the 5 victims are concerned. They have met up with him, and for a very long time to come, they will continue to meet him in their nightmares, in the dark hours before dawn and in the light of day, he will always be there. The friends and family of the victims are now focused on the impossible task of trying to restore some sense of security to a person they care about. Nothing else matters, nothing else should. It's easy to lose sight of how crime effects us, until it lands in our own yard. We are a clannish people, despite our claims to the contrary. We will always care more for our own, than for someone we share little in common with. Sure, there will always be exceptions to that rule, but by and large, we only care about those we share a commonality with. People who are just like us. We will continue to fain concern for others, but it's only a way to make ourselves feel like we are a little better than the guy next door.

Five women have found themselves to be in danger, in the one place they should be safe. Their lives have been irrevocably changed for the worse. It happened to THEM. And it's the only thing that matters now. It consumes every second of every day. They didn't ask to be in the place they find themselves in, they didn't get to choose. All of the odds, the media hype, and blogger babble, including my own, might as well be taking place on Mars. Five lives have been reduced down to one terrifying moment in time. It's all there is, nothing else matters. We would all be well served to remember that fact, and if we find ourselves about to inject our own baggage, prejudice, or opinion, we should ask ourselves, what if. What if it was someone I cared about? My wife, sister, mother. What if ?

  1. They should turn this guy over to his victims when they catch him. I'm sure that sort of thing would eventually be a deterrent to all the would-be rapists out there.

  2. Very good post. The police also are especially concerned with this because of it's SERIAL nature. The suspect will keep doing it and hurting people until he's caught. It's not like all the other singular shootings in the city. While many of the people involved in those are habitual criminals, they're generally not predatory in that they don't methodically pick victims unknown to them and attack them one after the other. That is why this is so scary. That is why police have devoted so much to it. Not race or anything else. And yes, as you so eloquently pointed out, the victims of this are devastated and violated. I know one of them.

  3. Well said, MM. There should be more voices out there speaking up on behalf of those who have been victimized by this horrible, senseless act.

  4. That is a good question...why isn't the "east side" community fighting back like the Waldo residents are? The Waldo community is starting web sites and sharing information to help catch this a hole. That isn't done on the east side because.....snitches get stitches.....that is the problem.

It isn't because it happened in a white neighborhood. Remember how much national attention the Prospect serial rapist got? Quit blaming everything on race and equality and start holding YOURSELVES and your NEIGHBORHOOD accountable just like Waldo residents are doing.

  5. I keep hearing about THE WALDO RAPIST. I've heard he gets in threw unlocked windows and doors how he broke a window once. I've heard about all the self defence courses being offered. I've heard the police talking about how women can protect themselves. I've heard about gun sales tazer sales etc. I watch the news for the weather, and I still have heard all this.
I know this is a ugly crime. It changes a woman's life forever. It changes her family's lives for ever.
What I don't understand is why would this last victim leave her window unlocked? In Feburary?

    2. We stayed alive which seemed almost impossible at the time. I have taken a number of self defense classes. Number one rule is keep yourself alive and we all did that. From what I know I fought back and got the worst treatment I knew I had to stop fighting to hopefully live through it.

    Excellent writing and entry, MM.

MM--why don't you put up sexist, demeaning pictures of women, too, like Tony does at his blog so you can have more "readers", while you're at it?

  7. Why do you suppose they tore up the sidewalk to get to the sewer pipe at the site of the latest attack? What could you flush down the toilet that would stay in the pipe under the sidewalk?

  8. MM,

I've been reading your blog for the last six months. I'm happy to see that you recognize the victims and what they are going through. The fact that these women were raped by a complete stranger will only make things harder for them. According to MOCSA (which by the way, is a great local support system for sexual assault victims) only 20% of rapes are committed by a stranger. Thank you for taking the time to give these victims the voice they need and recognizing the difficulties ahead.

  9. Thank you for validating the feelings of the victims. I live in the neighborhood and also am a friend of one of the victims so it is extremely disturbing to me. The victims need a voice and they have one due to you and others who care. The media coverage is important because it helps to raise awareness. The reward money is also important because hopefully it will aid in the arrest. God bless and we all pray that this will end and the perpetrator will be caught soon!

That's the question that is uppermost in my mind, too.

  12. I've left town because of the rapist. I was raped a couple of years back and the terror of a recurrence made it impossible for me to sleep. I stayed up until the sun rose everyday, before I fell asleep.

There are some untouched truths here. The city feels an immense anger against this man. Whether we're black or white we share that crowd/clan mentality.

Because of our frenzy, this man is feasting on power.

When he's caught, and I'm sure he will be, whether by police captivity or he chooses some woman who has a gun and she blows a hole through his soul, the way he's blown one through his victims, his family will feel embarassed and tortured by grief, by shame, by anger and many other feelings I can't begin to imagine.

    Mine is anger.

To them, he's a son, a brother, and believe it or not, possibly a husband or a father.

My heart goes out to his poor family. As the saying goes, we can choose our friends, but we can't choose our relatives.

  13. You could never convince me that the degree of a woman's fear of a rapist is dependent on the rapist's skin color.
Given that- if there is any racism involved in this issue, perhaps it is just with the rapist himself.
To not give heavy media coverage to the crimes of a predatory criminal should bring questions to the mind of those in the community-not the opposite.
I remember well some time ago the reporting on local news that there is a "no nark" policy in the community.
Haven't heard about that since the Waldo rapist has been devastating our community and that raises questions in my mind.
Would the lack of reporting this now be the result of racism?
yet, that isn't the question it raises in my mind because it makes no more sense than claiming racism for the reason these rapes have been so heavily reported.
Let us stop blaming black and white and get this predator.

  14. The Waldo Rapist has fucked up many peoples lives. Let's get him! There is a $15,000 reward if you can help turn him in.

To the black men in this city under scrutiny - help us find him. If you are innocent of wrong doing you should want this criminal caught and be as cooperative as you need to be. Not your fault he is out there, not the white man's fault either. Let's just work on getting him off the street, as a community. Enough about black vs. white. And I wish Tony KC could be arrested for his comments about "a few white woman..." Is this really what freedom of speech means? I don't think so! If we want equal rights as a community then let's act like a community! I certainly didn't see any black people at the Waldo fundraiser that was held to raise money to put towards the rewards fund to find the Waldo rapist. Why was that??? Come on people now, come together. Why can't we all try to make this a better place to live????????????????

  15. So I believe my sister broke the case and was the
one to give the PD the name of this person as her
neighbor and good friend back in the 80's was the
one who was assaulted (and sadly has since passed on) and brought this Bernard Jackson to justice--even though it took them awhile to find him (he escaped to CO) before he went to prison. How does claiming the reward work? My sister doesn't use the internet and is just very glad to have this skumbag off the street but I think it was because of her (and perhaps divine intervention??!) remembering his name that this guy
has been brought in. The timeline of events is
just too coincidental from the time she gave his
name and the details and the subsequent arrest. Does anyone know how this works?

    ReplyDelete
  16. PS Not to dismiss another person who helped put the whole scenario together with my sister with her (the other person's) misfortune
of meeting this guy (but no assault), the two of them both deserve to get the reward. Without her
story too, this web couldn't have been unraveled.

    1. No she doesn't deserve anything. Good detective work and the victims caught him. Bottom line we got him not some woman he dated or made bad choices to allow a psychopath in their lives and the lives of their children!

  20. As this is a somewhat older story now, it has died down in the news. I want to know why no one has addressed the fact that Bernard Jackson has NOT been charged with the attacks from 2009/2010.
I do not believe that Bernard Jackson is the present day "Waldo Rapist" I am wondering if the real criminal has been swept under the rug, Bernard Jackson was a distraction. Has this been covered up perhaps to conceal the bad press a powerful family, politician or possibly the University of Kansas not look bad.
Does anyone else think it is interesting that the "serial rapist" who was terrorizing the University of Kansas Campus slowed down, some one was caught etc, then these attacks in the Waldo area seems to occur right after?
Could it be possible that the actual current attacker was a copy cat rapist, mimicking the attacks at KU as well as the cold cases in Waldo in order to have DNA, evidence for another person to take the fall.
We could speculate all day, and for days to come.
My point of this post is we need to all carefully look at what has been given to us as far as the media, No one has been charged to the best of my research and knowledge with the 2009 2010 Waldo rapes cases.

    1. I realize my reply is WAY OVERDUE, but after years of looking up information on the web about the Waldo Rapist, I stopped for a couple of years. But somehow found this blog tonight, shortly after hearing that the trial for Bernard Jackson on the "recent rapes" has been rescheduled once again until Jan, 2014. How do I know this? Because I am one of the "recent" victims. So to fill you in...Bernard Jackson will be on trial beginning January, 2014 for what is referred to as the "recent" attacks. Those occurring between 2009 - 2010. Hope this answers you concerns. One more note, unfortunately in this "democratic" society of our, it takes a minute to get someone through the "justice" system. As a "victim" myself, no one is more frustrated about our systems than myself. Hope this sheds some light on your concerns.

      A "recent" Waldo Rape victim

    2. He is the man that raped us. He had years to perfect his only skill he has of raping women. He used every measure to not leave DNA. The 2 cases that may or may not go to trial had touch DNA. He probably was the same rapist in the KU rapes. From what I know all he has done when in and out of jail has raped women of all colors btw. He was in CA and CO. Raping women. Some states such as CA have statue of limitations on rape, he was without doubt in my mind the rapist in all those cases. Is anyone else disturbed that he was on parole and living in a halfway house with curfews, yet he was out raping in the middle of the night, and he had multiple "girlfriends". One who lived in the Waldo area? We are the ones that deserve to be outraged, because we know the truth!
