Occupy Wall Street. Americas Arab Spring or Americas Coldest Winter?
I keep hearing the Occupy Wall Street movement is Americas version of the Arab Spring.
If you think that comparison means an uprising against a murderous dictator, it doesn't. If you think that comparison means rioting, looting, tearing up shit, rape and assault, you are closer to the mark. Whatever OWS began as, whatever the message was originally, it's become lost on most of the so called 99 percent. From the handful of squatters in Kansas City, to the human landfill in New York, and now the riots of Oakland, this thing has devolved into a closer version of the Arab Spring than it's supporters care to admit. And by that I mean, whatever noble cause the original protesters laid claim to, is overshadowed by a disorganization, hypocrisy, petulance, stupidity, and increasing violence, and anarchy. Yesterday in Oakland rioters broke windows , built a huge bonfire in the middle of a city street, and shut down Oakland's port.
The violence, the sexual assaults inside OWS encampments, will be blamed on interlopers, outsiders, and the homeless, rather than actual OWS protesters. The agenda is finally clear in my mind. I wont presume to speak for the remaining 99 percent of Americans, which is the mantra of the OWS mobs. They claim to be speaking for 99 percent of Americans, I'd wager 99.99 percent of that 99 percent would beg to differ.
The message is clear. And the message is "We want your shit, if you have more shit than we do." The message is " We don't want to pay for our college degree. Even though we agreed to pay for it." The message is that of a petulant spoiled child who has been handed everything it could ask for, yet still demands more." Just like that spoiled brat, the OWS people are now starting to throw themselves on the ground, kicking, screaming, and holding their breath until mommy and daddy give them their way.
Are there people with legit grievances in the OWS movement? People who are older, paid their dues, become disenfranchised, lost their way, their hope? Sure, but they are the minority. Older, middle class, worked their asses off, lost it all. For those people I feel. But they aren't going to find their way among the majority of OWS degenerates. They have nothing in common with the young clueless shit heels who make up the majority of the group. So I'm not without sympathy. I just don't understand how throwing in with a bunch of green deadbeats is going to advance their cause or ease their burden.
The OWS mess will continue to devolve until it turns deadly. The lowest common denominator of America will continue to complain about their lot in life. They will bemoan the fact they can't get a job with that expensive Arts degree. When the reach a fevered pitch, when they take to the streets and start rioting and looting, and they will. When that happens, I won't shed a single tear or lose a moments sleep. The end result will be a whole lot of smashed heads and broken teeth. You reap what you sow.
Someone should have explained to these young chuckle heads that life isn't always fair. Some people will always have more shit than other people. Sometimes you have to settle for that less than idyllic job or life that you naively assumed would be handed to you after 4 years of Alcohol binges and worthless degree in mid century macaroni portrait studies.

ReplyDeleteDo you have any photos of the people at Penn Valley Park?
ReplyDeleteI've waited for a clear message to come from the group. Waiting for a sensible, achievable goal to form. NADA.
ReplyDeleteIMHO it seems there are the 2% vs 98%. We have 1% controlling the wealth and the government. We have another group who would like to replace them with themselves.
Any time you want to unseat the status quo there will be violence. Can a group raised on hugs and time-outs face off against a better armed and trained force? Without resorting to violence themselves? History tells us no.
I have hope someone, somewhere will provide a clear voice and direction for the movement. But the reality is the movement will be co-opted by the left wing politicians as the wingers on the right did with the Tea Party.
Break free of the chains of your oppressors, try on these new designer chains which are really much nicer than the ones you've been wearing.
Once we were the generation that would change the world and we did. Sorry for the mess we have left.
No pics of the penn valley people. Frankly Im more interested in the growing mobs than a handful of hippies and kids impotently raging against the machine. These pics are from oakland, and in my opinion are an example of how this thing is going to end up.

You may be right . I am not a tea partier, but, I have to say they got their point across with narry a busted window or rape.
I agree with some of what the OWS folks are saying, but I don't agree with any of their solutions.
ReplyDeleteI agree that big business has too much influence in our government.
I agree that the banking industry is far too powerful.
But neither of those are the faults of business or banks... it's the fault of the morons in power in DC. Whether republican or democrat, they all bend over backwards to do whatever the person with the most money wants them to do. What the OWS people should be asking for is those elected officials to have a spine and stop taking what basically amount to legalized bribes for their votes and legislative favor.
The OWS people just don't realize that while they *may* be protesting the right thing, they are asking for the people with the power in this equation (the politicians) to wield more power... and they think that is the solution. Less power for politicians is the solution to corporate control of America. If there is nothing for the companies to buy, then things *might* start to get better.
But.. who knows?
The OWS crowd in NYC got upset when the drunks and homeless ate up the spaghetti bolognese and goat cheese salad they had prepared for themselves, the truly unprivileged, and so for several days they separated the eating areas and fed the heathen peanut butter sandwiches and other slop hoping they'd go away and leave them alone. The irony is almost too much to bear.
ReplyDeleteI saw one of the OWS protesters on tv, crying and begging for help for the cause ... and later saw that the same individual was identified as a guy with an ivy league degree, living off his trust fund.
But what really pisses me off is the way that many of the mayors of these cities are coddling these ungrateful little shits and letting them get away with pissing on the doorsteps of nearby homes and businesses and breaking one city code after another. You can bet your ass they wouldn't have given the same "consideration" to the tea party. These mayors only care about their own next election and are every bit as greedy as the rest of them.
And, I can't repeat what I really think about all of them.
Yesterday, I read this article about how the OWS "movement" has raised $500,000 so far, and now it's having to deal with the problems that raising that kind of money brings with it.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.reuters.com/article/2011/11/02/us-usa-wallstreet-protests-money-idUSTRE7A12DY20111102
This line, from Pete Dutro (a core member of the OWS finance committee), made me laugh out loud: "People see like $500,000 and they say 'Wow that's a lot of money' but the reality is it's not that much money. You have a huge community -- we're bigger than most of the occupations -- and we probably spent a lot more money," he said."
OH REALLY? You mean, $500,000 doesn't really go as far as you might have thought it would when it comes down to brass tacks? If one could be smacked in the face with the irony, I'm sure it would've hit that Dutro guy by now!!!
still no irony has smacked me from that statement, and it is 5 yrs later. There was on average from October 1st until the eviction about 10 thousand people being serviced each day with food and other movement needs until the eviction on Nov 15. That said by my calculations means we spent about $1.09 per person over the course of being in the park, and we were serving at least 10k meals a day, which in my math $1.09 x 10,000people = $10,900 per day, $10,900 x 46 days = $501,400: which means we did pretty good with the money we had and really does not go as far as you imagined in brass tacks. Learn to do math before you say stupid things, even if it was like 5 yrs ago

DeleteI pretty much agree with old fart. The pols have been bought and paid for, and will only listen to those that did the bribing.
ReplyDeleteAs long as corporate elites are in bed with politicians, we will always have this problem.
The OWS folks need to decide just exactly what their mission is, or their protest will resemble Forrest Gump on his morning constitutional.....the one where his beard grew a foot.
THE BEST ADVICE i KNOW IS DO NOT A JOINER BE.
ReplyDeleteI agree with old fart too.
ReplyDeleteI went down there, I have some pics on my cell phone.
I googled "arab spring vs. occupy wall street" and came across your blog....!! Mainly to see what turned up, and mainly to see if any other clear headed people had articulated thoughts similar to my own. I agree so much with what you've said and intuited. Just wanted to say so. If you're interested, here's the post from my own blog. see what you think...http://sonicleese.wordpress.com/2011/09/26/impressions-of-the-new-occupants-of-wall-street-absurdity-and-mockery-are-a-few-things-that-come-to-mind/... cheers and keep writing!!
