I'm afraid your steak is going to be a little overcooked

The Hereford House is a Kansas City icon, it's been around as long as I care to remember. The food isn't what it once was, and I haven't been there in a couple of years, still in my eyes it's a Kansas City landmark. With a downtown that is quickly becoming unrecognizable, the Hereford House sits in a small pocket mostly unchanged. I was watching Fox 4 this morning and they were saying the ATF was investigating the explosion, that a special team that had been involved in investigating the Oklahoma City bombing was dispatched to look in to this small restaurant explosion. Seemed like overkill to me, but what do I know.

So I drove down there and took these pictures. It doesn't look that impressive, but it must have been a pretty good blast. What none of the News stations have shown is the west side of the building. The blast came out of the south end of the building, the entrance. The west side is the pictures below. You can see the wall is bulging out through the brick, it blew a wood panel off. You might want to think about the Golden Ox or the Majestic, for your next over priced downtown steak dinner.

  1. Took some out of town company down there last year and they loved the place and the food. The other newer places just aren't the same. Wonder what was going on here?

  2. Thanks for the photos. I agree that this place is a Kansas City landmark. In fact, I don't really consider their other locations as significant as this one down at 20th and Main.

But, one thing I've always wondered is why is it that place has looked boarded up for years? By that, I mean the South and West walls of the building had places in it where it looked like there was supposed to be windows back in the day, but they had been covered over with spackle or something. Your last photo shows an example of this. There's a panel that's not "stone" but looks like an old window or doorway that has been covered up.

Well, I'm curious to find out what went on here. Based on your pictures and the description in the paper, it doesn't sound like your typical fire.

  5. That is sad. I'm not a huge steak fan, but I enjoyed the times I ate there.

  6. Hey Miscreant, I went down there to check out the bombed out steakhouse too and while I was in the neighborhood I noticed that the old Wayne's Motorcycle Shop at Broadway/SW Blvd. is closed and they are renovating the building. I regret having never stoped in their for it looked like a hell of a place. What do you know about this place? Was it really KC's oldest motorcycle shop? and if so why is it gone now?

    Thanks man.

I had no idea Waynes was closed. I can't tell you a whole lot. I have been in there a few times, but not in the last 15 years. As far as I know he never had a huge inventory, mostly older bikes, never saw any new ones. I'll do a little research and if I come up with anyhting of intrest Ill post it.

  8. Right on man, after reading your blog for a while now I knew you'd be the man to ask about this. I just always thought it looked like a bike shop with good flavor.
