Conceal and Carry on College Campus is an Idiotic Idea.

I'd like everyone who thinks the amendment that would allow anyone with a conceal carry permit, to bring a weapon on university campuses to please raise your hand, so I can shoot you in it. Missouri Rep. Brian Munz-Linger sponsored a bill saying it would deter gunmen from opening fire on college campuses if they knew others could match their fire power. I picture Rep. Linger standing in his skivvies in front of a mirror doing a bad De Niro, ala Taxi Driver imitation.
"You talkin to me?" " You must be talkin to me, since I'm the only one standin here." Yes doofus I'm talkin to you. You sir, are a moron.

The mindset of someone who intends to start killing random people doesn't include worrying about other people with guns, who might shoot back. The whole argument sounds like it was conceived in a living room fort made of bed sheets and cardboard boxes, while drinking Hi C from a sippy box. It's a clear cut case of Dick Measuring. We are talking about college students here, you know, binge drinkers, HPV spreaders, spring breakers, frat boys, not exactly pillars of responsibility and rationality. And before some chuckle head opens their cake hole about teenagers in the Military carrying weapons, please shut it. I assure you having served in the military, okay it was the Coast Guard, Semper Paratus bitches, I promise you the young men and women in the military have received hundreds of hours of training, and they aren't all walking around on military bases locked and loaded. Know why? Because it's a stupid idea, shit happens, people get accidentally shot and killed. But the passage of this bill will guarantee that more than a few irresponsible college kids will be walking around, armed while loaded. It wont stop the crazy people from going on killing sprees, and it will insure that it won't be long before drunken college dummies start accidentally shooting themselves and others.

This Bill is nothing more than a play on peoples fears. The same people who think the government is trampling on their right to own a 50. cal gun that pierces armor and turns Kevlar in to tissue paper. The same clowns who think they need that assault rifle, because you never know when you might run across a a suicide bombing terrorist White Tail Deer. Look, I'm all for your right to bear arms, own guns, protect your person and property, seriously, have at it. But there has got to be some control over who carries what and where they carry it. Conceal and carry laws haven't reduced crime, and don't toss out some bullshit NRA stats, I watch the news, and I believe we have plenty of crime to go around. That said if it makes John Q feel safer to carry his pistol, and if John Q has jumped through the hoops to get a permit, then have at it. But schools and college campuses are not the place to exercise that right. Would you be okay with an 18 year old High school senior packin heat in school? What about a slow kid, say a 19 year old senior? I didn't think so. The bill would lower the age from 23 to 21, which really isn't any different than 18 or 19 developmently, just makes it easier to get booze to go with the gun.

  1. There aren't very many 19-22 year olds walking around with concealed/carry permits. Most of the people with a CC permit on a college campus are much older.

Besides, you basically say it over and over in your post.

People who want to carry/use a gun will do so regardless of the law.

  2. I think the proposed bill is a stupid idea, no doubt. Personally, I think anybody who is over 25 should be required to carry a handgun. In a few years the stupid and unlucky will all be dead and we can get on with our lives. But that's just me.

  3. darev2005 your proposal is very similar to a law passed in Kennesaw, Georgia which required all homeowners to keep a firearm and ammo in the house.

An armed society is a polite society.

  4. The mindset of someone who intends to start killing random people doesn't include worrying about other people with guns, who might shoot back. Some of them would likely see it as a feature rather than a bug, a chance to go out with guns blazing against opponents with far less skill and training than the average law enforcement officer.

Not to mention the legal mess that will result when the inevitable well-meaning wanna-be rescuer accidentally takes out a hostage instead of a perp.

Every time I hear that "armed society is a polite society" line, I think about Heinlein's book where they allowed dueling again and everyone carried weapons openly. It was a great fantasy when I was a teenager, but I doubt it would work very well in real life.

Besides, we used to allow shit like that, but we don't any more. Anybody ever think there might be a good reason for that?

  5. Just because The Man says YOU, a convicted felon, can't carry, don't bitch about it for the rest of us.

  6. Have you spent a fair amount of time on campus?

A sizable portion of any given university population is well over the teen years and most states who allow concealed carry require a 21 year old age requirement along with background checks and a long series of firearm courses.

Seems to me you're bagging a liberal anti-firearm position without doing any homework.

Have you noticed that these insane shooters always choose targets that have no-arms policies?

I carry, legally, without apologies, and I dare you to come up up with statistics that show me and my brethren to be of concern. Give me the numbers that show my permit holding status adds to the crime stats.

I think you're wrong on this one Midtown.

I dont think I said anything about people who carry adding to crime stats, I just said it hasnt done anything to deter crime, which is what the sponsor of the Missouri bill states. I also said I am all for your right to bear arms. I just dont believe its a good idea to have a bunch of college twits running around packing heat at frat parties where everyone is drunk as Cooter Brown. Anyone who thinks college students are pillars of society and shining examples of good judgement hasnt been paying attention.

We had a guy walk in a shopping mall last year and start shooting people, including cops. Seven cops have been killed in recent weeks by two seperate shooters, so I disagree that they tend to prey on the unarmed.

Both Missouri and Kansas require only an 8 hour firearms safety class. I'd hardly consider that "a long series of firearm courses."

Spreading misinformation doesn't really help your cause.

  9. I think both sides have valid points and both sides exaggerate. There is no correct solution, and there will never be one. I've been using firearms since I was a wee little lass. I also have military training, and I pack with a permit. I know I don't ever want to use it, but I would. And I never want my right to carry a firearm to be taken away. I also know the thought of other "law abiding" citizens packing is scary, regardless of their age. But my fear of injury from the "outlaws" is greater. Most of them ARE armed and intend to harm.

  10. Just FYI. Being intoxicated in possession of a loaded firearm is a felony in Missouri.

    PS, I'm for the law.

  12. Daphne, how many multiple shootings have been perpetrated by males ages 16-25 in high schools and college campuses?

Go ahead, say "just a handful". Nice answer.

How many men in the last year have we read about going on shooting binges?

Allowing students (of all ages) on campus with guns is a patently, fucking stupid idea, and most people - unlike yourself Daphne - are opposed to that.

"...bagging a liberal anti-firearm position without doing any homework"?

    Ahem.

    Fuck you.

That's a nice picture, Daphne - looking at the Sig Ep frat house at 1:00am, just after they've kicked of a 5-keg midnight madness party, with the knowledge that many of those young (and older) guys are getting tanked, with guns under their pillows two floors up.

Their first priority is getting laid, and their second priority is showing their big gonads off to other guys (and girls).

The good news the is that when you peddle your crazy, Daphne, no one is really listening to you, except the people that are already storing water in their basement in preparation for the end-of-days.

    Nice.

    Crazy bitch.

    You, therefore, are dead.

    See how easy this is?

  14. I have a CCW permit and I have a gun on me everytime I leave my house, there are a lot of people out there that prey on those they see as weak and it's time WE stand up for ourselves. It's time to stop being scared, it's time to get mad and take back our streets. I don't care where you stand on the gun issue because no one will ever change your mind. But if you go out and get a conceal carry permit get it in your head that you may have to use it and if you have to use it be prepared to go all the way meaning know that you may have to kill someone and be in the right frame of mind. You NEVER give up your weapon because it is more than likely the only thing keeping you alive.

    I need that bumper sticker.

    And a longer bumper.

  17. "The mindset of someone who intends to start killing random people doesn't include worrying about other people with guns, who might shoot back." --

Sounds good, but not supported by experience.

Spree killers are usually looking not for a fight, but for victims. If they meet opposition, they turn the guns on themselves, not on the opponent.

Besides, deterrence is only half the solution. When that fails, you must provide a response. If I'm caught up in a shooting incident, and I'm armed, I can either shoot back (if possible) or protect myself as I exit (which is more likely).

Without a gun, I can only hide, play dead, or run away and hope not to get shot in the back.

I agree that drunken underage students should not be permitted to carry firearms. Luckily for us, the CCW law already prohibits those factors. Allowing concealed carry on campus would not change that.

  18. Still haven't seen any legitimate reasons against the law. In a society where everything is based on statistics you can't just choose to ignore them in this case because of your hoplophobia.
